Mental health is an increasingly important topic in our communities, and knowing how to respond when someone is in crisis can make all the difference. Whether you're a family member, friend, colleague, or neighbor, having the skills to recognize the signs of a mental health emergency and offer support is a powerful way to help prevent tragedy.
We're proud to offer a critical workshop that could save lives: Be a QPR Gatekeeper: Learn How to Help Someone in Crisis. This event is designed to equip individuals with the essential tools to recognize the warning signs of suicide and intervene in a supportive, non-judgmental way.
What is QPR Crisis Training?
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer — three simple steps that anyone can learn to help someone in crisis. Much like CPR for the heart, QPR is a life-saving technique that can be used when someone is experiencing thoughts of suicide or in need of mental health support.
- Question: Ask the right questions to understand what the person is feeling and to gauge their mental state.
- Persuade: Encourage the person to seek help and offer them resources.
- Refer: Direct them to appropriate professional support, whether it’s a counselor, therapist, or a crisis hotline.
By learning these three steps, participants can become effective gatekeepers—people who help intercept a crisis and guide someone toward the help they need.
Why is this Workshop So Important?
The statistics on mental health and suicide are sobering. In the United States alone, nearly 50,000 people die by suicide every year, and many more struggle silently with their mental health. Suicide doesn't have a single face, and it doesn’t wait for “the right moment.” But in many cases, when someone in crisis receives support early on, the chance for recovery and hope increases dramatically.
Sadly, many individuals don't reach out for help themselves. They may not know where to turn or feel ashamed of their emotions. That's where the QPR Gatekeeper training comes in. By learning how to approach and support someone in crisis, you could be the person who makes a life-saving difference.
What Can You Expect from the Workshop?
In this hands-on, interactive session, you’ll learn:
- How to identify the warning signs of someone at risk for suicide or mental health distress.
- Effective communication techniques for speaking with someone in crisis, with an emphasis on empathy and compassion.
- Practical steps for offering immediate help and connecting them to appropriate resources.
- Real-world scenarios to practice your skills and increase your confidence.
The workshop is led by a certified QPR instructor who bring years of experience in mental health, counseling, and crisis intervention. It’s an opportunity to gain life-saving knowledge in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.
Who Should Attend?
This training is open to anyone, regardless of professional background. Whether you’re a teacher, healthcare worker, family member, or simply someone who wants to make a difference, this workshop will provide the skills you need to step in and help when it matters most.
Why Should You Register?
This is an opportunity to learn a life-saving skill that can truly make a difference in your community. By becoming a QPR Gatekeeper, you’re taking an active role in creating a culture of support, kindness, and intervention. It’s not just about preventing suicide; it’s about being a compassionate, informed person who can be there for others when they need it most.
Even if you don’t personally know someone who is struggling, the chances are high that you will cross paths with someone who is facing a mental health challenge. Your ability to recognize the signs and offer support could change the course of their life.
